One of the images is now on most of the promotional materials for the exhibit.<\/p>\n<p>The most famous squirrel, chosen by illustrators for its ability to crack golden nuts and sing songs, is the magical squirrel in Pushkin\u2019s \u201cTale of Tsar Saltan, of His Son, the Glorious and Mighty Knight Prince Guidon Saltanovich, and of the Fair Swan-Princess.\u201d The squirrel was given to Prince Guidon by the Swan-Princess, a magical creature herself.<br \/>\n\u201c\u2026There, beneath a fir\u2013behold!\u2013<br \/>\nCracking nuts all made of gold,\u2028<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1777\" title=\"blogsquirrel4\" src=\"http:\/\/spec.lib.miamioh.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/blogsquirrel42.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"216\" height=\"258\" \/><br \/>\nEmeralds left and right a-flinging,<br \/>\nSat that wonder-squirrel, singing:<br \/>\n\u2018Through the garden there she goes,<br \/>\nTripping on her dainty toes.\u2019<br \/>\nWith its tail the squirrel sweeps<br \/>\nShells and stones in tidy heaps,<br \/>\nWhile a charmed and happy throng<br \/>\nListened to the squirrel&#8217;s song\u2026\u201d<br \/>\n(Translated by Louis Zellikoff)<\/p>\n<p>Other squirrels, usually red and with long tassels on their ears, come from much later animal stories or appear as a small detail of a larger forest scene. These are just a few examples of the large and beautiful Russian squirrel population in Special Collections.
