Grandville&#8217;s <em>Les Fleurs Anim\u00e9es. \u00a0<\/em>Miami&#8217;s copy of this edition also features the original and beautifully ornate leather publishers&#8217; binding, as issued by R. Martin, the New York publisher.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2331 alignleft\" title=\"GrandvilleFlowersPoppy006\" src=\"http:\/\/spec.lib.miamioh.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/GrandvilleFlowersPoppy006-190x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"190\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/spec.lib.miamioh.edu\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/GrandvilleFlowersPoppy006-190x300.jpg 190w, https:\/\/spec.lib.miamioh.edu\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/GrandvilleFlowersPoppy006-649x1024.jpg 649w, https:\/\/spec.lib.miamioh.edu\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/GrandvilleFlowersPoppy006.jpg 1800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 190px) 100vw, 190px\" \/>Translated from the French by Nehemiah Cleaveland, the two volume text consists of selections of musings on the history and meaning of a variety of flowers by Alphonse de Candolle,\u00a0Taxile Delord, and\u00a0Alphonse Karr.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2332 alignright\" title=\"GrandvilleFlowersRose004\" src=\"http:\/\/spec.lib.miamioh.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/GrandvilleFlowersRose004-194x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"194\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/spec.lib.miamioh.edu\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/GrandvilleFlowersRose004-194x300.jpg 194w, https:\/\/spec.lib.miamioh.edu\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/GrandvilleFlowersRose004-664x1024.jpg 664w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 194px) 100vw, 194px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The accompanying illustrations by Grandville, engraved and hand coloured by J.N. Gimbrede, \u00a0are the highlight of this volume. \u00a0The illustrations of women as flowers personified, clothed in courtly fashions blended with petals and leaves, are exquisitely rendered and have both a fairy-like quality and a tongue-in-cheek playfulness about them that is captivating. \u00a0I\u00a0especially enjoy the gothic feel of the &#8220;Poppy&#8221; putting several crickets to sleep and the majesty of the &#8220;Rose&#8221; with her beetle subjects kneeling before her.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/spec.lib.miamioh.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/GrandvilleFlowersThistle.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2335\" title=\"GrandvilleFlowersThistle\" src=\"http:\/\/spec.lib.miamioh.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/GrandvilleFlowersThistle-192x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"192\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/spec.lib.miamioh.edu\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/GrandvilleFlowersThistle-192x300.jpg 192w, https:\/\/spec.lib.miamioh.edu\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/GrandvilleFlowersThistle-658x1024.jpg 658w, https:\/\/spec.lib.miamioh.edu\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/GrandvilleFlowersThistle.jpg 2000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 192px) 100vw, 192px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>J.J.
