An Essay Toward the Necessary Improvement of Education, Chiefly As It Relates to the Body,\u00a0<\/em>an 1802 Philadelphia imprint of\u00a0a\u00a0German work translated into English by the early feminist Mary Wollstonecraft.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2579\" title=\"GymnasticsClimbing005\" src=\"http:\/\/spec.lib.miamioh.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/GymnasticsClimbing005-174x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"174\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/spec.lib.miamioh.edu\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/GymnasticsClimbing005-174x300.jpg 174w, https:\/\/spec.lib.miamioh.edu\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/GymnasticsClimbing005-594x1024.jpg 594w, https:\/\/spec.lib.miamioh.edu\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/GymnasticsClimbing005.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 174px) 100vw, 174px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This work is largely about integrating physical activity in the education of youth and interprets the term &#8220;gymnastics&#8221; broadly, including some entertaining examples of exercises, including that gym class favorite: rope climbing. \u00a0Thinking about the differences between historical forms of gymnastics and the modern gymnastics performed in the Olympics today, I was surprised to discover that rope climbing was an event in the modern Olympic games as late as 1932!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/spec.lib.miamioh.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Olympics1932006.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2580 alignleft\" title=\"Olympics1932006\" src=\"http:\/\/spec.lib.miamioh.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Olympics1932006-218x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"218\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/spec.lib.miamioh.edu\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Olympics1932006-218x300.jpg 218w, https:\/\/spec.lib.miamioh.edu\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Olympics1932006-745x1024.jpg 745w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 218px) 100vw, 218px\" \/><\/a>A student worker brought to my attention that we had a bound volume of the official programs of the 1932 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles in our collection.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2581\" title=\"OlympicsRope007\" src=\"http:\/\/spec.lib.miamioh.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/OlympicsRope007-196x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"196\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/spec.lib.miamioh.edu\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/OlympicsRope007-196x300.jpg 196w, https:\/\/spec.lib.miamioh.edu\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/OlympicsRope007-671x1024.jpg 671w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 196px) 100vw, 196px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Rope climbing\u00a0was, in fact, an event in the gymnastics program.\u00a0\u00a0However, the 1932 Olympics were the last time the event was held.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2584\" title=\"OlympicsSwimming008\" src=\"http:\/\/spec.lib.miamioh.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/OlympicsSwimming008-194x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"194\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/spec.lib.miamioh.edu\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/OlympicsSwimming008-194x300.jpg 194w, https:\/\/spec.lib.miamioh.edu\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/OlympicsSwimming008-663x1024.jpg 663w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 194px) 100vw, 194px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The programs also had wonderful pictures of the star athletes at the Los Angeles Games, including some of the &#8220;Aquatic Stars&#8221;
