&nbsp;There are, of course, wonderful shared national traditions surrounding Thanksgiving: football, the Macy&#8217;s Thanksgiving Day Parade, the headaches of holiday travel, and the sleep-inducing feasting with family and friends. &nbsp;Hallmark still makes Thanksgiving greeting cards and I&#8217;m sure there&#8217;ll be some Thanksgiving images and greetings circulating in social media this week.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/spec.lib.miamioh.edu\/happy-thanksgiving-postcards-from-special-collections\/thanksgiving-postcards10\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3405\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3405 alignleft\" title=\"Thanksgiving Postcards10\" src=\"http:\/\/spec.lib.miamioh.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Thanksgiving-Postcards10-300x182.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"182\" srcset=\"https:\/\/spec.lib.miamioh.edu\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Thanksgiving-Postcards10-300x182.jpg 300w, https:\/\/spec.lib.miamioh.edu\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Thanksgiving-Postcards10-1024x624.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/spec.lib.miamioh.edu\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Thanksgiving-Postcards10.jpg 1968w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The imagery of Thanksgiving has always been about giving thanks for abundance: the abundance of a fruitful harvest and the abundance of joy and blessings as family gather together for Thanksgiving meals. &nbsp;I thought that this week would be a nice time to highlight some early traditional images of the holiday from our postcard collections.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/spec.lib.miamioh.edu\/happy-thanksgiving-postcards-from-special-collections\/thanksgiving-postcards7\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3402\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-3402\" title=\"Thanksgiving Postcards7\" src=\"http:\/\/spec.lib.miamioh.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Thanksgiving-Postcards7-e1353091523650-300x190.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"190\" srcset=\"https:\/\/spec.lib.miamioh.edu\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Thanksgiving-Postcards7-e1353091523650-300x190.jpg 300w, https:\/\/spec.lib.miamioh.edu\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Thanksgiving-Postcards7-e1353091523650-1024x650.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/spec.lib.miamioh.edu\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Thanksgiving-Postcards7-e1353091523650.jpg 1952w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Postcard collecting is still a popular pastime among hobbyists and you&#8217;ll see bins of postcards at many an antique shop. &nbsp;The picture postcard reached the zenith of its popularity in the period between the turn of the century and the first World War. &nbsp;Thanks to advances in color printing processes and in domestic and international mail services, it was an inexpensive and aesthetically pleasing form of communication for the general public.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/spec.lib.miamioh.edu\/happy-thanksgiving-postcards-from-special-collections\/thanksgiving-postcards3\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3398\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-3398\" title=\"Thanksgiving Postcards3\" src=\"http:\/\/spec.lib.miamioh.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Thanksgiving-Postcards3-191x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"191\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/spec.lib.miamioh.edu\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Thanksgiving-Postcards3-191x300.jpg 191w, https:\/\/spec.lib.miamioh.edu\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Thanksgiving-Postcards3-653x1024.jpg 653w, https:\/\/spec.lib.miamioh.edu\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Thanksgiving-Postcards3.jpg 1216w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 191px) 100vw, 191px\" \/><\/a>There are several collections of postcards in the Walter Havighurst Special Collections, including the Charles Shields Postcard and Trade Card Collections, the Clyde N. Bowden Postcard Collection, and the Charles Murphy Collection featuring postcards on public conveyances and railroads from around the world. &nbsp;Among the subjects depicted in the estimated 500,000 postcards in these combined collections are geographic locations and architectural landmarks throughout the US and the world and the traditional greeting card images of people, animals, flowers, and holiday and seasonal images. &nbsp;We&#8217;ve digitized our <a href=\"https:\/\/digital.lib.miamioh.edu\/digital\/collection\/tradecard\/search\">trade card collection<\/a> and initial plans have been made to create a digital collection of our postcards, as well.<\/p>\n<p><a style=\"color: #ff4b33; line-height: 24px; font-size: 16px;\" href=\"http:\/\/spec.lib.miamioh.edu\/happy-thanksgiving-postcards-from-special-collections\/thanksgiving-postcards5\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3400\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3400 alignright\" title=\"Thanksgiving Postcards5\" src=\"http:\/\/spec.lib.miamioh.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Thanksgiving-Postcards5-300x193.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"193\" srcset=\"https:\/\/spec.lib.miamioh.edu\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Thanksgiving-Postcards5-300x193.jpg 300w, https:\/\/spec.lib.miamioh.edu\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Thanksgiving-Postcards5-1024x659.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/spec.lib.miamioh.edu\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Thanksgiving-Postcards5.jpg 1976w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In looking through the hundreds of Thanksgiving themed postcards, I found many expected depictions of turkeys and cornucopias, pilgrims and Native Americans, most dated between 1900 and 1920. &nbsp;What I was surprised by were the many comical depictions of children leading turkeys to slaughter!
