{"id":4324,"date":"2013-03-01T13:13:00","date_gmt":"2013-03-01T18:13:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spec.lib.miamioh.edu\/?p=4324"},"modified":"2013-03-01T13:13:00","modified_gmt":"2013-03-01T18:13:00","slug":"from-the-stacks-john-pont-and-the-cradle-of-coaches","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spec.lib.miamioh.edu\/home\/from-the-stacks-john-pont-and-the-cradle-of-coaches\/","title":{"rendered":"From the Stacks: John Pont and the Cradle of Coaches"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>John Pont is a former football player and coach here at Miami University.\u00a0 He played running back for Woody Hayes (1949-1950) and Ara Paresghian (1951).\u00a0 In 1951 he was<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4330\" style=\"width: 259px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/spec.lib.miamioh.edu\/from-the-stacks-john-pont-and-the-cradle-of-coaches\/pont-lhb-jpg\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4330\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4330\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4330\" alt=\"Pont's playbook from when he was a halfback for Miami\" src=\"http:\/\/spec.lib.miamioh.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Pont-LHB-jpg-249x300.jpg\" width=\"249\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/spec.lib.miamioh.edu\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Pont-LHB-jpg-249x300.jpg 249w, https:\/\/spec.lib.miamioh.edu\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Pont-LHB-jpg-851x1024.jpg 851w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 249px) 100vw, 249px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4330\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pont&#8217;s playbook from when he was a halfback for Miami<\/p><\/div>\n<p>named All-American as well as setting several school records.\u00a0 Pont was the first person in Miami history to have his number retired (42).\u00a0 After one year of professional football in Canada, Pont came back to Miami as an assistant coach under Ara.\u00a0 Pont eventually became head coach when Ara accepted a position at Northwestern.\u00a0 In seven seasons at Miami Pont led them to a 43-22-2 record, two Mid-American Conference (MAC) Championships and one Bowl appearance (1962 Tangerine Bowl).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4331\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/spec.lib.miamioh.edu\/from-the-stacks-john-pont-and-the-cradle-of-coaches\/1956-miami-staff-pont-spec-jpg\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4331\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4331\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4331   \" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/spec.lib.miamioh.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/1956-Miami-Staff-Pont-Spec-jpg-300x198.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"198\" srcset=\"https:\/\/spec.lib.miamioh.edu\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/1956-Miami-Staff-Pont-Spec-jpg-300x198.jpg 300w, https:\/\/spec.lib.miamioh.edu\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/1956-Miami-Staff-Pont-Spec-jpg-1024x678.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4331\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">1956 Miami Staff (Wayne Gibson, Jay Fry, Woody Wills, John Pont, Carm Cozza, and Ernie Plank)<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">After Miami, Pont moved on to Yale University.\u00a0 From 1962-1963 he coached the Bulldogs to a record of 12-5-1.\u00a0 With his success at the Ivy League school Pont drew attention from the Big Ten, in particular Indiana University.\u00a0 He accepted the head coaching position there.\u00a0 He coached at Indiana from 1965-1972, leading the Hoosiers to their only Rose Bowl Appearance in school history, 1967.\u00a0 He was also named Coach of the Year for the 1967 season.<\/p>\n<p>From Indiana Pont moved on to Northwestern University.\u00a0 He was the head coach at Northwestern from 1973 to 1975.\u00a0 In 1975 he was promoted to athletic director, though he maintained his position as head coach until 1977.\u00a0 He remained as athletic director until 1980.<\/p>\n<p>After Northwestern, Pont worked various coaching positions: Hamilton High School (1984-1989);
