{"id":9581,"date":"2015-09-14T07:52:00","date_gmt":"2015-09-14T11:52:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spec.lib.miamioh.edu\/home\/?p=9581"},"modified":"2015-09-21T07:58:13","modified_gmt":"2015-09-21T11:58:13","slug":"music-and-theatre-manuscripts-come-to-special-collections-and-archives","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spec.lib.miamioh.edu\/home\/music-and-theatre-manuscripts-come-to-special-collections-and-archives\/","title":{"rendered":"Music and Theatre Manuscripts come to Special Collections and Archives"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Since 2008 researchers of music and theatre have benefited from the generous donations of Mr. Larry Moore, a Miami University alumnus 68, MA 70.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Moore, a New York-based freelance arranger and orchestrator, has been praised by the <em>New York Daily News<\/em> as \u201cone of the most ingenious practitioners in his profession.\u201d\u00a0 For the New Amsterdam Theatre Company, he supplied additional orchestrations for Victor Hebert\u2019s <em>Eileen<\/em> and <em>Sweethearts; <\/em>Jerome Kern\u2019s <em>Roberta<\/em>, Rudolph Friml\u2019s <em>The Firefly<\/em>, and the Gershwin-Romberg <em>Rosalie<\/em>.\u00a0 His restoration of Cole Porter\u2019s show <em>Jubilee<\/em> was performed by the New Amsterdam Theatre Company as well as during the Indiana University Cole Porter Centennial Celebration.\u00a0 For the Goodspeed Opera House, he provided orchestrations for <em>Oh, Kay!<\/em> And <em>The Chocolate Soldier<\/em>. With Michael Tilson Thomas, he orchestrated the New York City Ballet\u2019s Tea- Rose, based on unpublished Gershwin piano pieces. His adaptation of <em>Babes in Toyland<\/em> was commissioned by the Houston Grand Opera and later performed by Chicago\u2019s Light Opera Works and Opera Omaha. For Utah Festival Opera, he provided additional orchestrations for Frank Loesser\u2019s <em>Greenwillow<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Recordings include <em>Fifty Million Frenchmen, Babes in Arms<\/em> (both for New World Records), the complete <em>Show Boat<\/em> (for Angel-EMI), <em>Love Lives On<\/em> (The New York City Gay Men\u2019s Chorus), <em>Unsung Sondheim<\/em>, the <em>Lost in Boston<\/em> series (for Varese Sarabande), and solo albums for Jason Graae, Liz Callaway, Judy Kuhn, and Rebecca Luker. For city Center\u2019s Encores!, he has provided editorial work and\/or additional orchestrations for <em>Call Me Madam<\/em>, The <em>Boys from Syracuse<\/em>, and <em>Pal Joey<\/em> (all recorded by DRG.) His choral arrangements for Leonard Bernstein\u2019s \u201c<em>Dream With Me <\/em>and <em>\u201cThe Wrong Note Rag<\/em>\u201d are published by Boosey &amp; Hawkes. His own choral music is published by Yelton Rhodes Music of Los Angeles.<\/p>\n<p>The manuscript portion of the collection predominantly contains pieces written for the New York City Gay Men\u2019s Choir. There are several holiday selections as well as medleys of pop culture tunes. There is a section of documents related to Mr. Moore\u2019s affiliation with the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP).\u00a0\u00a0 Additional items of interest include report cards and diplomas from kindergarten through his master\u2019s degree, and family photos.\u00a0 The collection includes thousands of playbills and programs from various productions that Mr. Moore has attended.<\/p>\n<p>The printed music collection includes hundreds of popular songs from the 1900\u2019s forward. Well-known artists include Leonard Bernstein, George and Ira Gershwin, Cole Porter, the Beatles, and Henry Purcell. While the bulk of the manuscripts are in Special Collections, many of the books and media are held in the Amos Music Library.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the latest donations include full productions of <em>Roberta<\/em> and <em>Dearest Enemy<\/em> from draft to performance.
